raksha bandhan
PUNE: Taking the concept of eco-friendly rakhis a step forward, Vann Mahotsav, a unique programme organised by the Directorate of Social
Forestry, will be held at the Empress Botanical Garden from 10 am to 12.30 pm on August 5.
Looking forward to this occasion, schoolchildren in the city are busy making biodegradable and eco-friendly rakhis from seeds of trees like subabool', red and white gunj', castor, gulmohar, khaya', ashoka, bahava', parkinsonia, apata', babhul' and tamarind, among others.
"The idea is to celebrate Rakshabandhan by propagating the use of eco-friendly rakhis, instead of littering around on the special day. That is why we have come up with some 50,000 rakhis made from seedlings of various trees, grass, bamboo and other eco-friendly items, that are being prepared by schoolchildren to be sold for the big day," says Prakash Thosre, director, Social Forestry.
More than 1,000 such rakhis' will be sold at the Empress Botanical Gardens on August 5. Given the objective of Van Mahotsav, a few heritage trees trees that are over a 100 years old have been identified at this garden, around which students from ten different schools in the city will be tying eco-friendly rakhis that measure up to three feet.
"These heritage trees are here since the British Era, and they are cut down due to works like road-widening and construction. By tying rakhis around them, we want to raise awareness about such old trees, because they are an eco-system unto themselves. They house several species of birds, provide oxygen and give much-needed shade in a concrete jungle," says Thosre.
To add excitement to the event, a Vrukshadindi will be held wherein schoolchildren will walk into the garden with 27 saplings of trees that are worshipped for their relation to the zodiac signs as per the Hindu calendar. A special event called Nakshatravan will be held where top 25 women achievers from the city will grace the occasion to plant these saplings in the garden. Recitation of poems and street plays are also in the offing.
