What’s it about? When producers run out of stories of kitchen politics, they leaf through history books. This has been a trend for a while, and Meera is a product of one such hunt for a script. Meera is the story of a young Rajput princess whose love and devotion to Lord Krishna made her give up everything and thus elevated her to the status of a saint. Folklore has it that when young Meera, just four, found herself deeply drawn towards Lord Krishna. As she grew older, her devotion intensified and she resolved to be committed to him forever. Despite being forced into marriage with another man (Prince Bhoj Raj), she defied the social norms and continued to worship Lord Krishna as her lover.

Who’s in it? Newcomers are ruling the roost these days on television. And Meera isn’t any different. The role of Meera in her childhood is played by Aashika Bhatia. Playing the role of her mother is Gauri Harmit Kaur and Kunal Bakshi plays the father. Another central character in the plot is Meera’s cousin brother played by Paras Arora. And Twara Desai plays her best friend Lalita.

What’s hot? Much has been written and shown about Meera the jogan, but this show explores Meera’s childhood influences and experiences that made her a jogan. The show is rich in visual quality and the picturesque locations are eye-catching. But the USP of the show is the background score, which has made use of lot of wind instruments, that gels well with a historical saga like this one.

What’s not? The story drags itself endlessly and the long monologues of Meera seem to be never-ending. The script innovates but lacks execution. The scriptwriters themselves seem to be quite clueless about what their next scene should be. The actors show no skills of acting and those who do are just pushed in to the background, for instance Meera’s parents. Meera, at times, is made to look ignorant about the worldly happenings rather than naïve.

There is an episode where she conducts the nuptials ceremony with a statue of Lord Krishna. A scene prior to that she is shown asking her mom, “What does one mean by a life partner?” Now, a girl who doesn’t understand the meaning of the word husband knows the entire wedding ceremony. How?

uld you be watching it? people with a love for history and historical figures, might want to explore this subject. Our warning to you: Enter at your own risk.
