Kolkata: Tens of thousands of people lined the streets here on Tuesday to bid their last “lal salam” to senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and West Bengal’s Minister for Transport, Sports and Youth Services, Subhas Chakraborty, who died at a private hospital, a day ago.

He was cremated with full state honours in the evening.

Earlier in the day, admirers in overwhelming numbers, from all walks of life, waited to catch a glimpse of their “dear comrade,” some bursting into tears as the hearse carrying his body drove past – a spontaneous outpouring of the affection that they felt for the mass leader.

Member of the CPI(M)’s Polit Bureau Sitaram Yechury, flew down to the city to join the procession that accompanied the body to the crematorium.

The procession took nearly three hours to reach its destination, being held up by the milling crowds of mourners.

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee laid a wreath on the hearse when it reached the gates of Writers’ Building. So did the State’s Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta, his colleagues in the Cabinet and functionaries of the State government.

The body was taken out of the hearse at the compound of the Assembly, where the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Siddharta Sankar Ray and the former Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Somnath Chatterjee were among those who paid tribute to the seven-time MLA.

Mr. Bhattacharjee, Biman Bose, Secretary of the West Bengal State Committee of the CPI(M), Mohd. Amin – all members of the party’s Polit Bureau, Shyamal Chakraborty, member of the CPI(M) central committee, Mr. Dasgupta and Amitava Nandi were among the leaders of the CPI(M) who paid their last respects.
