FIR not to effect Rakhi's swyamvar

Rakhi Sawant
Rakhi Ka Swayamvar

Bosses at NDTV Imagine made it clear that FIR filed against the show Rakhi Ka Swayamvar won't affect the telecasting of the marriage oops! engagement. An FIR was filed against Rakhi Sawant and five others violation of Copyright Act. Gaurav Tiwari the owner of the portal swayamvar.com had lodged a complaint accusing the channel of forgery claiming he holds the copyright of the word Swayamvar since 2008.

Samir Nair, CEO of NDTV Imagine that the case has no merit and was dismissed by a lower court upon which Gaurav Tiwari had filed a criminal case against them. He said it was absurd to think that someone would own copyright over such words. He said that channel would stand by all the people against whom the complaint was filed and there were no issues with the telecast of the show.

Akashdeep chooses Marc over Negar

Akashdeep Saigal has emerged as winner in the task where they all had to peal maximum potatoes in Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao. This group treasure trunk task won him jannat. Jannat or lap of luxury is an advantage that a celebrity wins for himself if he performs a task well and emerges a winner. The winner gets chance to spend luxury night in the lavish tree house with a comfortable bed and fan. Also, the winner can take one companion along with him for the night.

“On this Akashdeep decided to take good friend Marc Robinson along with him for the night of luxury,” chirps the little birdie from the jungle. It was speculated that Akashdeep had a soft corner for Negar Khan. “There were so many incidents taking place in the show that the actor decided to call every girl his sister and made his point clear,” adds the source.

Well Akash seems to be too smart with all his tactics. Let’s see whether he is able to become the king of the jungle or not. But the million dollar question remains, if he is the king then who will be his queen.

Love Aaj Kal Review

Love Aaj Kal
Love Aaj Kal Review

Come to think of it, if the film carries the 'burden' of humungous expectations, it's imperative that it goes beyond those expectations. The reaction after watching the film has to be similar to a child who has laid his hands on his fav toy. The joyous smile would say it all. The question is, does Love Aaj Kal live up to the hype and hoopla surrounding it? Or does it go beyond that?

Love Aaj Kal is not an easy film to write and execute. Sure, it's a love story, but it's not one of those mundane love stories that talks of love and heartache. Here, the two stories, set in different eras, run parallel, but have a similar end.

To be brutally honest, it takes time to grasp the plot, since the past and present run concurrently. If you aren't attentive, chances are you'd lose the plot. Also, if you aren't aware by now that Saif enacts dual roles in the film -- playing his part as also the part of young Rishi Kapoor -- the goings-on would confuse you no end, when the transition occurs.

Love Aaj Kal is a director's show entirely. The relationships here are complex because the couple in love lives in complete denial. It is to Imtiaz Ali's credit that he has penned an offbeat story, developed a complex but comprehensive screenplay and extracted sensitive performances from the principal cast. At the same time, the writing isn't the type that would appeal to all sections of movie-going audience. Besides, the execution of the subject and also the pacing in the first hour are deterrents.

Final word? Love Aaj Kal makes you fall in love with love all over again. Makes you value your loved ones all the more. This film is special!

Love Aaj
London, San Francisco, Delhi - 2009.
Jai [Saif Ali Khan] and Meera [Deepika Padukone] is a modern-day couple in London. They are very happy together, but do not believe in tying each other down. So when life pulls them in different directions, they decide to call off their relationship, since long-distance relationships, in their opinion, don't work.

Love Kal
Delhi, Calcutta - 1965.
Veer Singh [Rishi Kapoor] is struck by a thunderbolt when he sees Harleen for the first time. He travels a thousand kilometers by train to stand under her balcony, only to have a glimpse of her face. And yet not speak a word with her.

Love Aaj Kal
Veer does not understand how Jai can treat matters of the heart without passion. Jai does not understand how Veer Singh could have been so naive and silly about Harleen in his youth. But as both stories unfold, we realize that the process of relationship might be different in different eras, but the experience of being in love remains the same.

Love Aaj Kal travels multiple continents and different eras. The subject matter is novel, never attempted before, but the material, the characters [Saif and Deepika especially] as also its execution is targeted at the youth in big cities mainly. As they say in filmi lingo, this one's a hardcore multiplex movie.

Another area where Imtiaz Ali experiments is by depicting Saif as the young Rishi Kapoor. It's a novel concept, no two opinions on that, but the question is, will it cut ice universally? Will people tend to get confused when the sequences turn sepia?

The film captivates in bits and spurts in the initial portions. Partly because the writing is so different. But the writing breaks new grounds in the second hour. It's in this hour that the film grips you completely, when the fragmented pieces are put together and a mesmeric picture emerges.

The second hour is the soul of the film. Right from the time Deepika decides to marry, till the last reunion, the film touches an emotional high. The sequence of events that lead to the culmination is incredible. Saif's interaction with Deepika at the marriage, or the gradual change in Saif's behaviour in the U.S. in the course of a song, or the realisation that marriage was a big mistake... moments like these take Love Aaj Kal to dizzy heights.

Imtiaz Ali is a genius. The film bears the stamp of an accomplished storyteller. This is a forward-thinking film that handles the new-age relationships with complete understanding. The songs compliment the goings-on beautifully. This is amongst Pritam's accomplished works. 'Twist' [already a rage], 'Aahun Aahun' [foot-taping], 'Chor Bazaari' [melodious] and 'Dooriyaan' [melancholic], each song is a gem. N. Natarajan Subramaniam's cinematography is fantastic. Editing [Aarti Bajaj] is wonderful.

Both Saif and Deepika come up with their career-best performances in Love Aaj Kal. Saif carries the most difficult parts with remarkable ease. Sure, we've seen him as the cool, urban guy in several films, but this one's the most demanding role and only a seasoned actor could've delivered it with such precision.

Deepika looks ethereal. Most importantly, in Love Aaj Kal, she acts very, very well. Matching up to Saif is no mean achievement and she does it in several scenes. This should be the turning point in her career. Rishi Kapoor is top notch. The actress enacting the role of Harleen is pretty. Rahul Khanna does well in a small, but significant role. Watching Neetu Kapoor in the end sequence is truly astonishing. She's so graceful.

On the whole, Love Aaj Kal is for the young and romantic at heart. Sure, it's not perfect, but the terrific performances, melodious music and stirring emotional moments [last 35 odd minutes] more than compensate for the hiccups. At the box-office, the film should start with a bang for four factors -- its novel cast, super music, great promotion and yes, Imtiaz Ali, a name that commands respect amongst moviegoers. Released extensively [approx. 1800 screens worldwide], Love Aaj Kal will have one of the biggest first weeks in India and also in the international markets. In India, the business will be superb across multiplexes, while single screens might not behave as energetically. But the business at multiplexes will ensure a fantastic recovery of the investment. Internationally, it has the potential to emerge one of the biggest grossers in recent times.

A tribute to Maharani Gayatri Devi

gayatri devi
maharani gayatri devi

The world renowned magazine Vogue had once listed her among the 10 most beautiful women in the world. Maharani Gayatri Devi lifted the veil off the face of Indian Royalty. She went beyond the traditional purdah to mesmerise the world with her intellect, beauty and royal charm. Her sense of styling was often compared to former US first lady and style icon Jacqueline Kennedy. The iconic princess who the first symbol of liberated Indian women passed away on at the age of 90.

Gayatri Devi was born on May 23, 1919 to the royal family of Cooch Behar. Her father was Prince Jitendra Narayan and her mother Maharani Indira Devi of Baroda. Gayatri Devi studied at Shantiniketan and later in Lausanne, Switzerland, where she travelled with her mother and siblings. Then she studied secretarial skills in London School of Secretaries; Brilliantmont and Monkey Club London.

Gayatri Devi was a tomboy as a child. She was an excellent marksman, a tennis player and a keen rider with a deep knowledge of horses. She would always partake in adventurous trips with their elegant mother to London and the European Continent. She was also known to have shot her first panther when she was just twelve. Her adventurous nature can be ascertained from the fact that she had her private plane at the age of 21.

The 19-year-old princess had the world at her feet but she chose to marry the renowned polo player Sawai Man Singh II of Jaipur who was already married twice. After a courtship that lasted for six years the couple decided to go for a wedlock that shocked their families. The Jaipur Royals lived a lavish life: hunting in their forests, spending summers in Europe, educating the royal children at elite schools in England, entertaining streams of famous visitors at their desert palaces.

The popular and beloved Maharani of Jaipur had her success in her political career as well. She ran for the Parliament as a candidate of the Swatantra party in 1962 and scored world's largest landslide poll win bagging 192,909 out of 246,516 votes. The achievement was endorsed by the Guinness Book of Records. Her fight against the Congress enraged the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who retaliated in 1971 by abolishing the privy purses. This meant stopping all royal privileges, breaking the treaties agreed upon in 1947.

She established the Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls School emphasising on the education of the girl child. Many traditionalist considered this as an attempt to counter purdah system. For decades after the independence this remained as the only institution which nursed the girl child liberating her from the veil. Throughout her life she worked for the liberation of the Indian women from the clutches of the male dominated society.

Be it her bobbed brown hair, chiffon saree, elegant jewellery or stunning presence Gayatri Devi commanded authority wherever she went. President John F Kennedy has once said introduced her during an event as "the woman with the most staggering majority that anyone has ever earned in an election." Gayatri Devi will always be saluted for crossing the threshold and breaking boundaries. She was one who tried to change the world and more importantly welcomed change.

It’s 'Guzaarish' time for Hrithik, Ash

Aishwarya Rai
Bhansali’s film starring Hrithik, Ash is set to roll

They have made an adorable couple in films like Dhoom 2 and Jodhaa Akbar. Yet the pairing of Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai isn’t written about as much as other popular onscreen jodis of Hindi film industry.

Now, Hrithik and Ash come together again for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Guzaarish, a love story in which the protagonist is a paraplegic. Bhansali, known for his attention to details, has been meeting a number of paraplegia patients in the last few weeks. Hrithik, on his part, has been preparing for his role by moving around on a wheelchair in his home. Ash, however, has been too busy with the shoot of Mani Ratnam’s film Raavana.

As Bhansali readies to start shooting the film on Friday in Mumbai’s Film City, he’s confident that Ash won’t take long to slip into her character in the film.

The director has already visited the holy dargah of Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer to seek blessings before starting the project. It’s a ritual he reportedly does before the start of his films.

On Friday, as Ash and Hrithik report on the sets, Bhansali would be accompanied by his mother who will reportedly do the mahurat. The film will later be shot in Goa.

‘Guzaarish’ is said to be a love story between a partially paralyzed man and a nurse. It is believed to be the story of a paraplegic who seeks the help of the woman he loves to end his life.

Luck - Movie Review

luck movie review
luck movie review

A movie that not just borrows its concept but also shamelessly copies a few sequences from the acclaimed French-Georgian film ‘Tzameti’ (meaning 13), ‘Luck’ stretches the bizarre to its limit.

A new game is in town in director Soham Shah’s Luck. Testing one’s luck in a casino or a race course is passé. Too thanda. It’s time to put the very life on the line. The lucky one who dodges death gets millions of bucks. The one who doesn’t becomes history. That’s the game the mafia don Moussa ( Sanjay Dutt ) is selling to the world. “Its pure business,” says Moussa, who himself prides over his unfailing luck. He’s the man who blindfolded crosses railway tracks with speeding trains without getting as much as a scratch. And bullets just don’t end up in the right barrel when the gun is pointed at Moussa. Such is his luck. Now, he’s set to take the betting industry to a new high with a game where luck decides life or death.

The players in the game need money for one reason or the other. Ram (Imran Khan) needs to pay off the crores of debt his scandalous stock broker dad left him after committing suicide. Major (Mithun Chakraborty) needs lakhs for the medical treatment of his wife. Ayesha (a sedate Shruti Haasan) is in the game for mysterious reasons. And there are other players like Raghav (Ravi Kishan), a serial killer whose luck saved him from the gallows, and Shortcut (Chitrashi Rawat) who’s in to win money.

The remaining film is just a series of death-defying games which the players are made to play. In between, writer-director Soham Shah throws in some romance and some drama. But the film keeps dipping and touching new lows in the second half. The stunts, the action and the pyrotechnics are too thanda for the generation brought up on violent playstation games. The swimming-with-sharks sequence looks like a bad joke while the ridiculous climax on a speeding train fails to pump the adrenaline.

Imran still has a few rough edges to iron out in his acting even though he puts in a sincere performance. There’s a scene in the first half when he’s walking away from Danny Denzongpa. The walk is so pretentious that you instantly catch it. Shruti Haasan looks good but appears sedated for the most part of the film. She’s a good voice but her dialogue delivery has much scope for improvement.

Sanjay Dutt, the tapori rockstar in a mafia don’s pathani suit, delivers an expected performance, while Danny (playing his sidekick) has a magnetic screen presence. Mithun, Ravi Kishan and Chitrashi Rawat are strictly okay.

The film’s music doesn’t offer much to hum about. The dialogues are not just banal but dumb at times. One dialogue goes: “Jinhe chaand pe jaana ho, woh taaron par nahin ruktey”, when it should have been the other way round. The cinematography, full of speedy zoom-ins and crane shots, is not bad. The background score, too heavy.

The only thing to relish in this plagiarized thriller are a few hair-raising moments. The opening train sequence is pretty gripping. The ‘Tzameti’-copied shooting sequence could have been better.

But there’s no forgiving the loopholes. Guess what? Ravi Kishan who plays a serial killer gets acquitted and is honorably released from the prison just because the rope of the noose around his neck snapped at the gallows. Or take the climax when Ravi Kishan keeps shooting his machine gun at Imran who’s just a few metres from him, and not a single bullet finds Imran. These and more such sequences are a bummer for any viewer who had gone expecting an edge-of-the-seat experience.

There’s hardly any adrenaline rush to be had from this ‘Luck’. The action and stunts are too many, but poorly executed. And by the end, the film is such a marvelous mess that you feel like screaming “God! Iss Bungle Se Mujhe Bachao”, but only end up cursing your luck.

Nokia launches most-awaited ‘N79’ in Indian Market

Nokia N79
Nokia N79

Nokia, the world's biggest mobile phone maker, has launched the N79, a characteristic typical of the iconic Nseries that combines intelligent and customizable design with a fully-loaded multimedia device.

The newly launched handset is powered by Symbian OS 9.3, Series 60 v3.2 UI operating system, instead of the typical Windows Mobile OS. In addition, it comes equipped with a complete range of multimedia experiences such as AGPS with voice navigation, high-speed connectivity, superior web browsing experience, 10 pre-loaded N-Gage games.

Moreover, while many mobile phones only include a measly 1.3 megapixel camera, the Nokia N79 comes with an extra formidable 5 Megapixel camera, along with Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus, dual LED Flash, which captures sharp, clear images and videos that can be edited without even using a personal computer.

Combined with the device’s high-fidelity sound from its dual speakers, the device comes with the integrated FM Transmitter, which makes it a true companion for music lovers. As far as memory is concerned, the mobile uses microSD, which allow it an extendable memory of up to 8GB, on top of the 50 MB of internal memory.

Each Nokia N79 pack comes with two additional interchangeable Xpress-On smart covers in different colours, which have an inbuilt microchip that ensures that when the back cover is changed, the display theme changes automatically to match the colour of the cover.

As a special offer for Indian consumers, the Nokia N79, comes preloaded with ‘Anthems 1998-2008’, a compilation of 19 all-time favorite classic club songs and 17 new age music videos, presented by the Ministry of Sound.

The company claims that it’s newly launched ‘Nokia N79’ offers up to 372 hours of battery time in standby, and 5 and a half hours while talking.

The Nokia N79 is available at a price tag of Rs 22,939 through Nokia outlets, across the country.

RBI Credit Policy leaves key rates unchanged

NEW DELHI: The RBI has kept the key rates unchanged and increased the inflation forecast to 5 per cent. The GDP is expected to grow at 6 percent and the money supply growth is seen at 18 per cent, according to the quarterly review of the economy, released on Tuesday. ( Watch )

The deposit growth is seen at 19 per cent and the review has said that there is scope for the banks to cut interest rates. The SLR also remains unchanged at 24 per cent.

“It is worth reiterating that the Reserve Bank will maintain an accommodative monetary stance until there are definite and robust signs of recovery,” it said in its review.

“The overall macroeconomic scenario continues to be uncertain although it is expected that the fiscal and monetary stimulus measures will boost domestic demand in 2009/10. On balance an uptrend in the growth momentum is unlikely before the middle of 2009/10,” the central bank said in its quarterly statement.

The repo rate, at which the central bank lends cash to banks, stays at 4.75 per cent, which is its lowest in 9 years, and the reverse repo rate, at which it absorbs surplus cash from the banking system, stays at 3.25 per cent, according to the Q1 Monetary Policy.

The RBI has cut its short-term lending rate by 425 basis points in six steps since October to support growth. The RBI also slashed the reverse-repo rate by 275 basis points since early December and brought down the cash reserve requirement by 400 basis points to 5 percent to keep credit flowing. This has resulted in injection of over Rs 5,61,700 crore into the economy.

In its quarterly review of the economy released on Monday, the central bank said there were indications of inflation firming up by the end of the year due to increases in commodity prices, easy monetary policy and expansionary fiscal policy.

Asia’s third-largest economy grew 6.7 percent in the last fiscal year ended March after expanding by 9 percent or more in the previous three years. Private sector economists expect growth between 5.8 and 7.2 percent this year. At its April review, the RBI forecast growth of 6 percent in 2009/10.

Wholesale prices are below last year’s levels, largely as a result of oil prices retreating from their all-time peaks reached in July 2008. But they have been rising since March as food and oil prices have started to creep up, while consumer price inflation hovers near 8 percent.

India’s fiscal deficit is on track to reach 6.8 percent this year, its highest level in 16 years, with the government set to borrow a record 4.51 trillion rupees ($94 billion) in 2009/10, roughly three times last year’s borrowing.

The RBI urged a return towards fiscal consolidation. “Large fiscal deficits if continued strictly beyond the recovery period, can crowd out private investment and trigger inflationary pressures,” it said.

Pitch and conditions
Sri Lanka’s main batsmen have found it tough going in Dambulla and here’s what captain Sangakkara had to say about the pitch: “Over the years it’s been a tough wicket to read. It’s had various scores on it from low to high, the highest being 285. The key is not having a negative mindset going out there. It’s best to go out there with an open mind, assess the conditions very quickly and communicate it to the dressing room. Those few little basics that we talk about in building partnerships are going to be the key.”

Quotes
“You are never sure as to whether they will be explosive or be destructive. Sometimes they are a hard side to play, all the more so we should be thinking about our game a lot more that we should about theirs.”

Kumar Sangakkara on Pakistan

“We are aware of Sri Lanka’s strength we must stick to our basics every day and in every game. Sri Lanka’s fielding is fantastic and they have the upper hand in fielding. If we field like we did in the Twenty20 we can provide good competition.”

Younis Khan knows where his opponents have the edge

FYJC admission- fyjc.org.in – Chaos continues after the second merit list allotments

fyjc mumbai
fyjc mumbai

FYJC admission- After the second merit list was announced the chaos continues for the allotment of seats in Junior colleges. Many students got through the second merit list for FYJC via online admissions but discovered that the college they had been allotted doesn’t have enough vacant seats.

This happened at a number of junior colleges across Mumbai on Monday morning, resulting in big chaos. Colleges had been allotted double, triple and in some cases even four times the students than the number of vacant seats they had for FYJC admission.

SIES College had 64 vacant seats after the first merit list and allotted 157 students in the second merit list. The students were admitted according to 2nd merit list on Monday and have called the rest of the students on Tuesday to check if they get a seat. At National College, Bandra, some students got admission in the second merit list but after reaching the college on Monday, it actually did not have enough seats to accommodate all the students whose names appeared in the 2nd meri list.

Complete confusion happened at Mira Road’s Royal College on Monday as hundreds of students lined up to take admission after they were all allotted a seat in the second merit list. But actually there were only 38 vacant seats in the commerce stream and 206 students have been allotted seats in the 2nd merit list. Even at Hinduja College of Commerce, Charni Road, 785 students were allotted seats after the second merit list; the college had only 500 seats unfilled after the first merit list.

According to the deputy director’s office, 20% more students were sent as the state expected several students to cancel admissions.

Anil gets emotional at RNRL AGM

Anil Ambani

Anil Ambani

Anil Ambani would be expressing his emotions in the public for the second time. More than four years after the demerger of Reliance empire, the younger Ambani went to the brink of emotional burst with tears welling up in the eyes when talked about his late father Dhirubhai Ambani and estranged elder brother Mukesh in the annual general meeting (AGM) of Reliance Natural Resources (RNRL) today.

Twice his voice broke with emotions when he mentioned the ‘trust’ in business, which was taught by his father. “What Reliance Industries (which is fighting a case against RNRL over gas supply from Krishna-Godawari basin) has been communicating in the last few years is that it has no regard for its own solemn word, no time for values, no respect for the sanctity of contracts and, most of all, no morality in its headlong pursuit of corporate greed. The most important word for Shri Dhirubhai Ambani was “TRUST” and that word has, unfortunately, gone missing,” he said in his fully loaded 90-minute speech.

Earlier in 2005, at the Reliance demerger AGM, Anil first made an emotional exit from the company as he sat in the second row with rest of the shareholders. This time, when he became tearful before the RNRL shareholders, his wife Tina and son also were seen moved by the speech.

Kokilaben, mother of Ambani brothers, has attended the AGM of Reliance Power, which completed just before RNRL AGM. However, she preferred to be absent in the second AGM, when Anil has lashed out at the elder brother. Earlier, the Bombay high court twice advised Ambani brothers to settle the dispute over gas in consultation with the mother.

The corporate greed of Reliance Industries (RIL) is a stumbling block in the future of RNRL, he said and remembered the words of his father, “there is a thin line between the need and greed.”

RNRL was formed solely for the supply of gas from RIL to group companies for power and other projects. “Hence, the gas supply contracts are critical for the future of RNRL. Unfortunately, RNRL will become a shell company if the gas supply contract is not honoured. Accordingly, we are determined to take all legal steps for the implementation of this agreement,” said Anil amid slogans from shareholders saying, “Anilbhai, we are with you.”

“Over the past 5 years, I have made every possible effort to resolve the outstanding issues with RIL so that we can all focus on realizing our founder’s dream. But, unfortunately, without any success,” he quipped.

Anil also said he showed his willingness to meet the Mukesh anytime at anyplace in one hour notice. “I offered to personally meet at a time and place of the Bombay High Court’s direction, at an hour’s notice, and sit across the table with my respected elder brother to amicably resolve all issues. Unfortunately, RIL informed the court that it was not convenient for him to participate in any such discussions,” he said.

Anil said RIL, in which he worked for nearly 25 years, is still very close to his heart. He also congratulated the RIL team for its efforts to produce gas from Krishna–Godawari basin.

Sach Ka Saamna breaches no official rule: STAR Plus

sach ka samna
sach ka samna

STAR Plus, the general entertainment channel, has said its reality show, Sach Ka Saamna, has not violated any programming guidelines prescribed under the existing cable laws in the country.

On July 22, the I&B ministry had issued a showcause notice to STAR Plus for alleged violation of section 5 of the Cable TV (Regulation) Act, 1995, for showing a television programme that depicts “vulgarity, indecency and is against good taste”. The ministry gave time till July 27 to respond to the notice.

STAR Plus sources say it is based on an international game show and it does not, in any manner, depict obscenity or vulgarity. “STAR Plus is airing a parental guidance warning during the telecast of each of the episodes. Also, the show is being aired at a late night timing of 10.30 pm. The channel has not violated any provisions of the programming code,” said a company source requesting anonymity. However, when asked to comment, a company spokesperson declined to do so.

In the show, the contestants are asked 21 varied and intimate questions about their personal and professional life.

Bipasha's Hollywood dream comes to an end

Bipasha Basu
Bipasha Basu

Just few days back there were tabloid reports about Bipasha Basu’s first Hollywood project starring Titanic villain Billy Zane, going on floors. But now news has trickled in that the project is being scrapped. It was supposed to begin shooting on July 25th. It is learnt that producer Smita Thackeray had backed out with reasons being cited as personal and professional.

This yet to be titled film was to be directed by David Silverman and was to feature Bipasha in Angelina Jolie’s Lara Croft avatar. It was supposed to be shot in Kodaikanal and had actor Rajvirr of Kaise Kahen (2007) fame playing Bipasha’s second love interest. The film was to have Bipasha doing some intense love making scenes with both Billy and Rajvirr. Rumour mills suggest- the choice of Rajvirr as the male lead wasn’t appreciated but Smita Thackeray was adamant about him playing the role.

However now that Smita has backed out from the film, it only means that for now Bipasha’s dream of going international has come to a standstill, at least for now. Though for a long time both Bipasha and her boyfriend John Abraham have been trying to go international, they haven't succeeded.

Shruti Hassan's bikini show: Highlight of Luck

shruti hassan
luck shruti hassan

Is life just a game of Luck? It seems so for actors Imran Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Shruti Hassan and director Soham Shah. The judgement day has finally arrived. Their film Luck, which is releasing today, will ride on luck to a great extend, as the film lovers are going to have a taste of an action thriller after a long hiatus.

Coming to the hype around Luck, Shruti Hassan is one to watch out; not just because she is the daughter of Superstar Kamal Hassan but for her daring ways. She seems to be not riding on her dad's fame, as she is not leaving any stone unturned to make her own niche in Bollywood. She's got the guts to appear in a bikini in her very first film itself. It is said that she has performed some unbelievable stunts besides providing glamour to the film. Shruti is certainly one of the highlights of Luck.

Imran Khan is another actor to watch out in this death-defying action film. He was made to experience the pain of failure in Kidnap after having had a dream debut with Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. This time around, he has chosen action to woo the film lovers. He is said to have performed dangerous stunts in Luck. The fate of this film will surely influence his future course of action.

Another highlight of Luck is Sanjay Dutt. He will be seen for the first time on screen since he forayed into politics. Having faced lots hardships both in political arena as well as personal life, Munnabhai must be banking on Luck to do away with the bad memories.

Director Soham Shah's heart must be beating like never before, as Luck is a sort of 'do or die' game after the debacle of his directorial debut Kaal in 2004. This time around, he has Bollywood's chocolate boy Imran Khan Tamil superstar Kamal Hassan's daughter Shruti Hassan to pull him out of the danger zone. He also has roped in actors like Mithun Chakraborty, Danny Denzongpa, Ravi Kishan, Chitrashi Rawat, Rati Agnihotri and Snita Mahey. Shree Ashtavinayak Cine vision Ltd produces the film with music composed by Salim-Sulaiman.

The hype around Luck is so far so good but we'll come to know its true colour only after a couple of days. It is hitting the theatres today. Watch out!

It’s official! Katrina Kaif is making Salman wait for marriage

Katrina Kaif
Katrina Kaif

Mumbai: Finally, the ‘kat’ is out of the box. Katrina Kaif has made a confession that was long due. After using every trick in the book to keep her romantic alliance with Bollywood’s angry man Salman under wraps, and snubbing every controversy with her coy smile, Katrina Kaif has boldly owned up to her cushy clandestine love affair with the macho actor.

In a candid interview given to a magazine, the swishy babe has thwarted all murky speculations surrounding her ever so guarded personal life.

Stating loud and clear that she is romantically involved with Salman Khan, the stunner has lashed out at all those stating that her love affair with the feisty Khan has gone kaput. And it’s not just a one-line admission of her love for her beau, but Kat has snubbed aside her shy girl image to divulge some saucy details about their rocking relationship.

Speaking to a magazine, the stunner stated that she is so hooked on to Salman that she carries his picture with her at all times. Besides stating that Salman’s a ‘wonderful person’, the diva has also hit out at all those who try to hamper his spirits by speculating about him.

What’s more, unlike popular belief that Katrina feels suffocated in company of her overtly possessive beau, the swishy babe has stated that she is extremely happy in her relationship.

And as for the marriage question ruling everyone’s mind, Katrina stated that though Sallu is all set to tie the knot, she is not ready to settle down any time soon, thereby making Salman wait.

Well, Katrina and Salman’s love affair might be common knowledge but it just became official.

Rakhi Sawant’s NRI hubby will move to Mumbai

Rakhi Sawant
Rakhi Sawant

Rakhi Sawant, who’s getting married live on tv on August 2, has made it very clear that she wouldn’t be leaving her work behind to join her husband.

Nor would she like a ghar-damaad kind of house-husband. While she was all set to settle for a long-distance marriage, Toronto-based entrepreneur Elesh Parujanwala has done the next best thing. He has decided to shift base to Mumbai from Toronto.

Speaking from his hideout in Mumbai, Elesh was surprisingly calm and clear-headed about his future plans. “There won’t be any need for a long-distance marriage, or for Rakhi to join me in Toronto. I’ve already shifted a part of my business from Toronto to Mumbai and I intend to stay put in Mumbai for a very long time.”

Speaking on how a well-to-do Canadian-Indian boy ended up being on a show where he’s one of Rakhi Sawant’s prospective grooms Elesh laughed, “At first I was skeptical. In fact, I initially expressed my misgivings to the programme’s creators. I didn’t want my children to one day ask me why I married their mom on a game show. But I’m glad I came on Rakhi Ka Swayamvar. It isn’t a game, though it may be a show being watched by millions. For Rakhi and for me it’s a matter of life and death.”

Elesh says he grew up on a staple diet of Bollywood in Toronto. “I used to watch Rakhi Sawant in her films and her music videos. At that time I never thought I’d one day be asking her hand for marriage. Life is funny.”

Incidentally, the decision to marry Elesh above the other short-listed candidates came from Rakhi’s ‘brother’ Ravi Kissan, who apparently reprimanded her strongly for even considering any of the other boys.

Says Ravi, “Elesh always stood out. And I told Rakhi this. The less said about some of the other contestants the better. One of them, Manmohan Tiwari, had so much attitude, it was almost like he was trying to be the small screen’s Ravi Kissan. Sadly, the channel encouraged him to behave the way he did, arguing that it enhanced the TRPs. He behaved very badly with Rakhi. He had a girlfriend tucked away all the time. Why was he wooing Rakhi then? I told her Elesh was the best guy for her.”

PM launches INS Arihant in Visakhapatnam

HYDERABAD: India on Sunday reached a milestone when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur launched the country's first India's first nuclear submarine launched indigenous nuclear-powered submarine 'INS Arihant' for sea trials.

Prime Minister arrived at the ENC's airbase INS Dega in Visakhapatnam by a special IAF plane along with his wife at 11 am and drove straight to the naval dockyard to commission INS Arihant into the sea.

The 6000-tonne submarine will first be put on sea trials for two years before being commissioned into full service.

In these two years, the submarine will also undergo harbour trials of its nuclear reactor and other systems.

Sunday's launch coincides with Vijay Diwas marking India's triumph over Pakistani intruders in Kargil.

With the launch of the submarine India will join the exclusive club of US, Russia, China, France and the UK with similar capabilities.

The ENC headquarters in Visakhapatnam has been decked up for this historic event, navy sources said.

INS Arihant has been built under the advanced technology vessels (ATV) programme at a cost of $2.9 billion at the naval dockyard in Visakhapatnam.

Code-named Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV), the submarine christened 'INS Arihant' (destroyer of enemy) was launched for sea trials at the Matsya naval dockyard here.

As India has declared "no first use" of nuclear weapons, the country's weapons system must survive a first strike for retaliation. Therefore, Arihant's primary weapon is stealth as it can lurk in ocean depths of half a kilometre or more and fire its missiles from under the sea.

The 6000-tonne submarine is powered by an 85 megawatt capacity nuclear reactor and can acquire surface speeds of 22 to 28 kmph (12-15 knots) and submerged speed upto 44 kmph (24 knots). It will be carrying a crew of 95 men and will be armed with torpedoes and missiles including 12 ballistic missiles.

Four more nuclear-powered submarine of this class have already got government's nod and these would add to the Navy's underwater combat potential in the years to come.

Defence Minister A K Antony, Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy witnessed the event.

The Prime Minister flew to Vishakapatnam this morning by the IAF's newly acquired Boeing business jet and reached the venue of the submarine launch by road.

Sea trials of the submarine will be conducted in the Bay of Bengal off Vishakapatnam, where the vessel was under construction for the last two decades.

The Rs 30,000-crore secret nuclear submarine project was started in the 1980s though it was conceived by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the 1970s.

The first official admission of the project nearing completion came this February when Antony had announced it during the AeroIndia show in Bangalore.

INS Arihant can also be armed with cruise missiles. The DRDO is already working on an equally secretive Sagarika project for a 700-km K-15 missile, capable of carrying nuclear weapons.

With US, Russia and China already fielding 5,000-km range SLBMs, the DRDO too has recently tested an SLBM based on the design of 3,500-km range Agni-III.

The induction of ATV will help India to complete the nuclear weapons triad, as envisaged under its nuclear doctrine to deliver nuke-tipped missiles from land, air and sea.

India has land-based nuclear-capable Agni ballistic missiles, apart from IAF fighters such as Mirage-2000 that can deliver tactical nukes.

Two decades ago, India had operated a Charlie-class nuclear submarine, christened INS Chakra, leased from Russia for three years between 1989 and 1991.

Moscow will again lease out two Akula-class nuclear submarines to New Delhi for 10 years. Plans to deliver the submarines this June were hit by a mishap during sea trials late last year. But hopes have soared for its delivery in 2010 after Russia took out the repaired vessel for sea trials again early this month.

Kargil war hero: I should have died in 1997

kargil
kargil war

HAVERI: Tears rolled down on the cheeks of the family members of slain soldiers of Kargil war when they recalled the war while commemorating Vijay Diwas.

Even as patriots paid their tributes to the heroes, there was one warrior from Haveri __ Mahammad Jahangir Khawas __ pinning hopes on the government for a better future.
Khawas, in spite of serving the Army for 20 years as Havaldar and driver, is now running from pillar to post seeking assistance.

He was part of the Indian contingent fighting Kargil war __ Operation Vijay __ for two years, prior to his retirement in 2000. Post-retirement, he returned to Haveri to settle down. The district administration honoured him while the elected representatives praised his services and promised him a site, five-acre land and a job. But for his bad luck, all those promises just remained on paper. His efforts to get all the goodies sanctioned have turned futile.

"Me and my wife have four children to feed. Now I am serving as a security guard at a private company to make ends meet. I should have been killed in Kargil war...because of that at least my family would have received compensation to a life," a visibly hurt Khawas said, pinning hopes on the government for better days.

Govt may soften FBT blow for salaried class

NEW DELHI: The government may extend a helping hand to India’s two-crore strong salaried class in September 2009 when the burden of paying fringe benefit tax (FBT) will be moved from the employers’ shoulders to the employees’, as envisaged in Budget 2009.

According to a finance ministry official, the new rules being framed by the revenue department could allow increasing the non-taxable portion in the conveyance allowance, which at present stands at Rs 800 per month. He, however, refused to elaborate whether the new rules would bring about such tax exemption limit for other perquisites as well.

As things stand, the employees would feel the heat during the last seven months of the current fiscal as the enhanced tax liability of the first five months would reflect in the tax deducted at source of employees from September onward, thereby reducing their monthly take-home salary.

Consultancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers’ (PwC) executive director Ashutosh Chaturvedi said the abolition of FBT would put the burden not only on employees but also on the administrative cost of the employers due to issues of multiple compliance.

“Given the current economic situation, where salaries of employees are already under stress, it is important that they are not put in an adverse situation again,” he said.

The FBT allowances include allotment of shares free of cost or at a concessional rate, free or concessional tickets to employees for their private journeys, reimbursement on conveyance, entertainment, hospitality, food and beverages, paid vouchers to name a few.

What constitutes as Income on Indian soil

india incometax

A look at what constitutes as Income on Indian soil and what is not from the perspective of the IT department. The IT department defines certain incomes as Accruing or Arising in India. This is the basis of calculating your income and income tax. Let's know more...

The IT department says that for any company or individual (resident or non-resident) who also has business in geographical locations outside India, only the part of income which can be reasonably attributed to have been earned in operations happening in India will be considered for calculation of Income tax.

Residential Matters: There arises a question of who/what is a Resident of India and who/what is not a resident of India. The IT department has defined these entities.

An Individual is defined as a resident in India in the previous year if he/she satisfies one of the following conditions:

1. He/she has spent a total of 182 or more days in India in the assessment year.

2. If he/she has spent a total of 60 days or more in the assessment year and has spent a total of 365 days in the previous four years. For example in case the assessment year is 2008-09, then if you have spent >60 days in India between 1st April 2008 and 31st March 2009 and a total of >365 days during 1st April 2004-31st March 2008.

3. For anyone who is in the merchant navy (but, on an Indian Ship) or has gone out of the country for employment, the above clause will become 182 days in the assessment year and 365 days in preceding four years.

The IT department also states very clearly that if a person is deemed resident for one source of income, then, he will be counted as resident for all incomes in that particular year.

A person is said to be not ordinarily resident in India if that person satisfies any one of the following criteria

1. Has been a non-resident in India in nine out of ten years preceding the year of assessment.

2. Has spent less than 792 days combined during a period of 7 years prior to the assessment year.

Now that we have suitably understood who is defined as a Resident Indian for the purposes of Income tax, let's look at which of their income is deemed Indian.

The following are considered to be income accrued in India. Any income which is gained from or through any business connection in India. This could be directly or indirectly. Incomes which are received from a property which is situated inside Indian borders. Through or from any source based in India and from the sale of a capital asset inside India.

Thus what the IT department says is that if they can clearly define that the source of the income is in India then the Income too is accrued in India.

To put the above discussion into more clearer terms:
1. Any salary paid in India is deemed to have accrued in India.

Even any charges which are collected as payable for a service rendered in India is regarded as income earned in India.
2. If a government employee or citizen of India is reimbursed by the Government for rendering any service outside India then it is deemed as accrued in India.

3. Any dividend which is paid by an Indian company outside India to a resident as defined earlier will be considered as an income earned in India.

4. Interest payable by the government is considered as accrued in India. This would apply for all kinds of government securities and saving instruments like bonds.

5. Any interest received from a resident except if that person has borrowed money from you to pursue business activities outside India. The logic behind this could be that this would ensure positive cash flow into India.

6. If the interest is paid by a non-resident to you then it will be added to your income except if that person has used the money borrowed from you to use for business activities in India. The logic behind this would be to boost investments in India.

7. The same concepts of point 4, 5 and 6 are applicable for any income generated from Royalties or copyrights.

8. For any income from fees for technical services provided the IT department uses the yardsticks as mentioned in points 4, 5 and 6.

Although at a cursory glance some of the ideas discussed above might sound to be the stuff that our Auditor/Financial Planner should be concerned with and not us, it is imperative that we understand the philosophy behind them so that we are more in control of our income tax assessments. With the increasing benefits of technology the tax man is becoming more and more competent in keeping track of your activities vis-à-vis your income tax implications. Thus it is highly advisable that we are very clearly aware of all the rules and regulation and ensure 100% compliance. After all its our hard earned money that will work hard for the Indian economy.
