tamiflu
GURGAON: At least 92 residents of Gurgaon have swine flu-like symptoms, but they have neither got their test reports nor been started on Tamiflu.
Though the government’s treatment protocol says patients should be put on Tamiflu even before the presence of the H1N1 virus is confirmed, health officials maintained that it was not possible to give Tamiflu to every suspected case. ‘‘ If the patient is serious , we are giving it but not to all suspected patients,’’ admitted chief medical officer S S Dalal.
He added that all suspected patients were ‘‘ suggested’ ’ to be home- quarantined. ‘‘ Our swine flu ward has a facility to admit three patients at a time. Currently, nobody is admitted here as no patients are found to be serious. Last week, three patients were admitted here who were discharged from the hospital after recovering from the disease,’’ said the CMO.
An awareness and sensitization drive has been launched in schools, private hospitals and residential areas.
Meanwhile, relatives of the suspected patients complained that the unprecedented delay in test results was leading to fear and panic. ‘‘ My 6- year-old son is a student of Amity International School where four swine flu cases have been reported. He showed symptoms of the disease and we took him to the civil hospital where his sample was collected. I have been doing a round of the hospital everyday in the hope of the result since August 9. I have got neither the report nor any medicines which is making me very tense,’’ said Tarun Jain, a resident of Sector 56.
‘‘ The hospital authorities should provide the test reports within 48 hours and if they fail to do so, at least they should take care of the suspected patients so that others do not contract the disease. They are not doing anything ,’’ accused R K Bhutani, a Sector 14 resident who had come to the hospital to get himself checked.
